Leave it to chance

Xavier Dolan

Magic of spaces

When Xavier arrives (late) at the studio for the interview, wearing a blue leather jacket and black jeans, he already knows what he wants: to start the interview before the photos are taken, smoke several cigarettes before beginning, suggest a few ideas for photo poses, share the music he likes with us, and answer some questions but not others. It's annoying, and it's irresistible. Perhaps those are the qualities so typical of film directors. It's a gift, it's a fault, and it's also an opportunity.

Xavier Dolan's personality is so complex and multiform that it is as hard to totally love him as it is hard to totally hate him. If he irritates and fascinates you, gets on your nerves and elicits your admiration, it is because at the age of 21, the young prodigy of Quebec cinema has already directed, written and played in his first feature films, "J’ai tué ma mère" and "Les Amours Imaginaires", and is preparing a third and even a fourth.

"Laurence Anyways is the last film in a trilogy on impossible love," explains Dolan. "And in this film I also wanted to pay tribute to fashion and Yves Saint Laurent." Fabulous shots put the spotlight on the clothes and designs to be seen in 2012.
