o discover the story of Saffron, it is essential to embark on a journey to the breathtakingly beautiful High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Here, a rare ephemeral product of nature lies cocooned within the delicate mauve petals of a tiny flower. Saffron, or Za’faran in Arabic, prized for millennia. As coveted as gold, the medicinal properties of saffron are mentioned as early as 1550 BC in Egyptian papyrus. Stimulating, rejuvenating, saffron has been used to clarify the complexion, improve circulation, reduce pain and lift the spirits. The Romans mixed saffron into ointments, balms and perfumes. Alexander the Great bathed in warm baths infused with saffron to heal his wounds. For Cleopatra, a saffron-milk bath was an aphrodisiac, enveloping her skin in a golden glow.
